In 1645, after being defeated by Koxinga (Zheng Chenggong), who would later become known as National Hero Number One in Taiwan history books., Zheng Zhilong surrendered to Ming forces under Prince Fu Junji.

Following his surrender, he served as an admiral in Admiral Shi Lang's fleet against Gowa Kingdom during their invasion of Ryukyu Kingdom (present-day Okinawa).
