The story revolves around the forbidden love between a powerful white snake spirit named Bai Suzhen (also known as the White Snake) and Xu Xian, an unsuspecting mortal man.
Bai Suzhen's Origin
According to Chinese mythology, Bai Suzhen was once an ordinary white snake living in the mountains near Chang'an (present-day Xi'an). One day, she encountered a mysterious Taoist priest named Fahai who possessed extraordinary powers. Intrigued by his abilities, Bai Suzhen sought his guidance in order to enhance her own magical prowess. Under Fahai's tutelage, she underwent rigorous training and eventually mastered various supernatural skills.
Meeting Xu Xian
As fate would have it, Bai Suzhen encountered Xu Xian while he was on one of his many journeys through the countryside. Enchanted by his innocence and kind-hearted nature, she fell deeply in love with him without revealing her true identity as a serpent spirit. Their chance encounter blossomed into an intense romance as they spent more time together.
Forbidden Love
Despite their strong feelings for each other, their relationship faced numerous obstacles due to societal norms against interracial relationships between humans and spirits or demons from ancient China's Confucian society. However this did not deter them from pursuing their love for one another.
